J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit has to be the greatest children's fantasy book in existence. First published in 1937, the book has lost none of its appeal over the years. The events recounted take place before “Lord of the Rings.” The book follows the journey of Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit enjoying a quiet and contented life before being whisked away on an adventure of a lifetime by the wizard Gandalf. Bilbo is tasked with reclaiming a hoard of treasure. But to do that, he will have to cross Misty Mountain and the untamed wilds of Mirkwood. And hence commence a journey that promises to change Bilbo’s life and reputation forever.

The Hobbit is a book full of adventure, heroism, song, and laughter. Few books can stand at par with “Lord of the Rings.” But “The Hobbit” manages to do so with ease. To some level it speaks to us, calling us to seek out a journey to the unknown. This is perhaps the most appealing aspect of this book. Both children and adults will enjoy exploring the unforgettable world of Bilbo, Gandalf, and Gollum. Be sure to add this book to your reading list if you haven’t already.
